The Need for More
Todd drove a few miles away and went into a gas station bathroom.
He looked in the mirror and saw a little blood on his hand and sleeve, so he washed it off.
He wet some paper towels and went back to his car to clean up any blood. There was very little,
just a few drops on the seat and door and a few drops on the hood.
It was
only midnight. Todd still had all night to fight crime. He felt good after all that. He liked
the adrenaline rush and he was begining to feel invincible. He took a close look at his vest,
where the knife hit him and there was the tiniest mark. He pulled out his own knife and tried
to stick it through the bullet-proof material and he couldn't. This stuff is great, he thought.
Well, back to work, the night is young. Todd drove back to the smash and grab
neighborhood and parked his car a few blocks away. He wanted to walked there instead of driving,
because he figured they would recognize his car.
When he got to Cicero and
Jackson, he saw that the crowd had dwindled down. There was only five guys there now. He didn't
notice the other guy that was in on the smash-and -grab earlier, so he walked up to the five
that were there.
"Anybody want to buy some free rib-tip dinner coupons
from Colemans Ribs?" He asked.
"Man, I already got a whole bunch
of those, get out of here, stupid." A tall goofy looking guy with glasses said.
"Oh, okay. Sorry." Todd responded as kindly and he started to walk away.
Just then a husky voice spoke from behind the others. "Where did you get those, old man?"
And under his breath, directed at the others, he added "Leo had some of those in his jacket
when it got snatched by that old man. I think this is him."
Todd heard
every word, but just kept on walking. He hunched over more than usual to really look vulnerable
and leaned on his cane, but he didn't answer, he just kept walking. He turned his head slightly
and looked back out of the corner of his eye. Two of them were coming.
A few
more steps and Todd stepped between two buildings, into the darkness and he quickly turned
around to face them and pulled out a knife, but held it to his side, so it wasn't showing.
He heard some quick steps that were trying to be quiet and they emerged around
the side of the building.
"Where did you get those coupons, mother fucker?"
The big one asked, as he tried to grab Todds collar.
Todd blocked his hands
with his cane and stepped back. "I found them. Why? What's it to you?"
Then the tall, skinny one spoke. "Well, we want them. And all your money too." And
he stepped quickly around his buddy, toward Todd, as he pulled out a gun and pointed it right
at Todds face!
"Please don't shoot me, I'll give you everything I have."
Todd meant it too. His face wasn't bullet-proof!
"I'll take your leather
and that fucking cane too." He said as he grabbed the cane.
Todd pulled
the sword out of it, as the mugger pulled on his end and he brought it around in a circle to
slice the bad guy on top of his head. He kept swinging it in a circular motion, chopping downward
on the enemy. At the same time, the gun fired and Todd felt something warm on his neck. But
he didn't stop. He was swinging it in a figure eight now, chopping downward toward them. Suddenly,
the man with the gun fell and the other one took off running.
Todd chased
him around the side of the building and swung his sword in a figure eight, slicing him on both
sides of his neck. He fell, passed out, without even sceaming.
Todd looked
toward their friends and there was only one guy sitting there. He apparently didn't notice.
Todd quickly faded back between the buildings and grabbed the missing part of his cane and
the gun that was laying there next to the pile of what used to be a man.
Todd
walked away quickly now. He touched his neck and it was bleeding. He started trembling with
fear at the thought of being shot, a bullet lodged in his throat, trying to explain what happened
at the hospital, or worse, not making it. He felt all around his neck and realized that the
bullet just grazed him. What a relief!
I think that's enough for one night,
Todd reasoned. He headed back to his car. He grabbed some napkins out of the glove compartment
and wiped himself off. He looked in the mirror at his neck. He would be alright. What a relief.
He parked at the train station and took off his battle gear. He packed it into
the back-pack and walked over to his pick-up truck. As he drove home, he relived every moment
in his mind. The chances he took, the mistakes he made and the score he settled and won.
