The Switch
The next morning, Todd found himself in Cook County Jail,
sitting in a waiting room, waiting for his name to be called, so he can go before a judge,
for an arraignment. Next to him sat a man who was very talkative and seemed like a nice guy.
"Name's Luther." He said.
"I'm Todd. Glad to know
you." They shook hands.
"What are you in for?" He asked Todd.
Todd answered truthfully. "Killing a couple of muggers, who were trying to
kill a man. He was passed out on the ground and these two punks were still bashing his head
in. So I snuck up behind them and stabbed them with a sword."
Luther
laughed. "I like your style, man. That must have felt good. I always wanted to do that,
you know, kill somebody who really deserved it."
"What about you?"
Todd asked.
"I'm in here because I slapped a clerk at a music store.
I bought a cd that wouldn't play. When I brought it back, all I wanted was another one. They
were all out of those, so I asked for my money back. She told me they never give money back
and I would have to exchange it for another one. I wanted this one. I demanded my money back
and she just laughed at me. Can you believe that, she had the nerve to laugh in my face. Well,
I couldn't help myself. I automatically slapped her. When she fell back, I opened the cash
register and took ten bucks. My cd cost ten-forty. I grabbed the ten and showed it to her.
I said, see, I got my money back. Next thing I know, I'm in here."
Todd
laughed and said "I like your style too. You're lucky they only charged you with Disorderly
Conduct. They could have gotten you for assault or robbery."
"I
was only taking my own money back. I through the cd at her, so she got that back. I didn't
rob her. And if you ask me, it was her that did the assaulting." Said Luther.
Todd added "I agree she deserved it. And I'm glad you got your money back. It's just too
bad that you had to spend the night in jail. As for me, I'll probably never see daylight again.
I'm dying. I have a rare disease. That's why I went on this binge looking for killers. They'll
probably find out about the others now. So I believe it's the end of the line for Todd Bolo."
Luther seemed genuinely concerned. "That's too bad you have to die so young.
I wish I could help you. I'd really like to see a little less scum out there. I'd kill some
of them bastards myself, if I knew I could get away with it, or especially if I knew I was
going to die. You might as well take some of them with you." Luther laughed at the thought.
Then his face went blank. "My wife got raped a couple of years ago. I know where that
mother fucker lives too. I would love to kill him. But I don't want to spend the rest of my
life in jail. It's a terrible thing for a man to live with, knowing and not being able to do
anything about it."
Todd responded. "I'd kill him for you, if you
could help me get out of here."
Luther smiled an evil smile. "Do
you really mean that? You'd really do it? Because, I can think of a way right now, that could
get you out of here."
"How?" Todd asked. Luther just nodded
his head up and down, but didn't say anything. Then, Todd looked him square in the eyes and
asked "are you sure that he did it? I'll really do it. I promise."
Luther believed him and smiled a warm smile, the kind of smile that only a true friend gives.
"I have an idea. This will get me in a lot of trouble, so you really have to promise me
that you'll do it. I mean, when you get out, you will really kill that son of a bitch."
"I promise. But, just to clear my conscience, convince me that he really
deserves to die."
