She took a step back, put her hands on her hips and seemed a little angry. "What do you mean, you wasn't looking for me? Then why are you here?"
"I was doing some research on the guy that used to own that store." Todd became a little sad now. "I have an incurable disease that is very rare and the only other person known to have had it, was the guy that used to own that store."
   "Mr. Pigannelli?" She asked.
"Yes. You knew him?" Todd asked.
"Of course I knew him. I have been going to that store ever since I was a kid. I grew up in this neighborhood. He used to give me free candy and homemade bread."
Todds eyebrows raised, then lowered back to a frown. "This is a tough question to ask, but I have to ask it. Did you ever have sex with him?
She was shocked. "Of course not! How could you even ask a question like that? He was thirty years older than me. And married. And ugly!"
"I'm sorry. Did you ever eat after him? Or use his toilet? What I'm trying to say is, maybe I got this disease from you and you got it from him."
She shook her head in disbelief. "I don't have a disease."
"Are you sure. Maybe you should go see my doctor, in Paddock Lake." Todd threw in "please go see him, I'll pay for it."
She said she would and then they changed the subject and started talking about old times together, for a while.
They decided to go see Todds doctor right away
She came up clean, no disease. Todd was happy for her. But he still needed an explanation. How could he have gotten this disease, if not through her?
He dropped her off at her house and got her phone number. He said he would call her in a few days. Although, he was thinking that he probably wont call her. No sense dragging her down this dead end road, with him. He liked her alright. But he wanted to give her a chance to live. He didn't want her to contract this disease from him. She was clean and he wanted her to stay that way.
He said goodbye and headed back to Chicago. Oh well, he thought, I guess the doctors and laboratories will have to figure this one out.
He stopped at a roadside motel about half way back. He was tired and needed a bed. He slept in his car last night and hadn't really had a good nights sleep for days. It was a dumpy little room, but the bed felt great. He fell asleep almost as soon as he laid down.
