The Deal

Todd woke up at three am. He laid there trying to go back to sleep, but couldn't. The motel bed was comfortable, but he knew he was done sleeping. He was used to waking up early now and his body was trying to tell him that it was time for a jog. But, he wanted to relax today. He laid there thinking about all the trouble he was in now, how very few good friends he has, how much he missed his wife, how long he had to live and what the police must know about him, by now.
Todd put some jogging clothes on, even though he wasn't going jogging. He packed his things and checked out of the motel. He didn't know where he was going, just back to Chicago.
Todd pulled up in front of Luthers house and just sat there a minute. He wondered if Luther would buy his house. He thought he would sell it for whatever Luther offered, even if it was just a few thousand dollars. He knocked on the door.
Luther opened it and smiled. "Hey Todd, come on in. How are you?" They shook hands.
Todd walked in and saw Betty sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee. Luther said "Honey, I want you to meet a good friend of mine. This is Todd. Todd, Betty."
Betty smiled. "It's nice to meet you, Todd. Would you like a cup of coffee?"
"Yes. I would love one. Thanks." He sat down.
Luther was the first to bring up the subject. "Well Todd, we've been thinking about that house quite a bit lately. And I'd like to make you an offer. I told you I don't have a lot of money. But this is my best offer." He looked at Betty for some approval and she smiled. "All I have right now, is five thousand dollars. I could give you that, right now. Then, next month, I could come up with about two more. After that, the most I could do, is pay you monthly, say about eight hundred a month. And then, by the time we reach what you consider to be a good enough down payment, we'll move in."
Todds eyes widened and he smiled. "That's a nice offer and more than I expected. I'll take it." And with that, he stuck a hand out, to shake with Luther, then Betty. "I'll even go one better for you guys. You can move in today if you like, as soon as you give me the five. Not only that, but I'll sign the deed and give it to you today. I trust you Luther. And I might not be living too much longer. I don't have any kids or family to leave my house to, so I might as well give someone who's been a true friend to me, a good deal." He pulled the deed out of his pocket and laid it on the table for Luther and Betty to see.
"Let me get my checkbook." Luther said, all excited. And Todd signed the deed.
Todd went to Luthers bank and cashed it. He knew it would be good. There was something about Luther, Todd just trusted him. It takes a good man to know a good man. And Todd knew Luther was one.
Todd divided the money into four equal stacks and put each one in a different place. He put two stacks of the money in two different places in his pick-up truck, which was still downtown. He put some in the Buick and some in his pocket.

A few days later, Todd drove by his old house. Sure enough, there was Betty, tending the flowers in the front yard. She really made that place look good. Todd never saw it look so nice.
He pulled into the driveway and Betty turned her head when she heard the crunch of the gravel. She ran to the front door and yelled inside. "Todds here." Then she ran toward Todd.
"We just love this place, Todd." She said, obviously meaning it.
"I'm, glad you like it." Todd answered. "Is Luther home?"
Before she could answer, Luther stepped out of the door. "Hey Todd. How's it going."
"Good. How are you guys doing?"
"Never better."Was Luthers answer and it made Todd smile.
Todd didn't stay long. He was worried about the possibility that the cops would show up. He wished them well and left. He went back to Chicago and rented a dumpy little hotel room on Broadway. Unpacked some clothes and made himself comfortable.
