Luthers New Home
The next morning, Luther and Betty were enjoying their morning
coffee, when all of a sudden there was a hard pounding on the door.
"Who
the heck knocks like that?" Betty asked Luther, hoping he would be the one to answer it.
"I don't know, but I'm gonna find out." He said as he rushed to the
door. He looked out the curtain and saw three police officers. Two in uniform and one white
haired cop with a suit and tie on. He opened the door.
"Can I help you
guys?" He asked.
"Yeah, where's Todd?" The white haired one
asked.
"He doesn't live here anymore. We just bought this place."
Luther answered. And then Betty appeared at his side. "I'll handle this, Honey."
And Luther squeezed her arm a little as he tried to gently push her away. She took the hint
and sat down.
The old cop spoke again. "How well do you know Todd?"
"Not very good at all. In fact, we only met twice. The first day we looked
at this place and the day we bought it, a few days ago." Luther answered. Then, trying
to seem truthful, he asked "why? What's this all about?"
"He
has a warrant for his arrest. He's wanted for two murders. He's a very dangerous man. If you
see him, make sure you call us." And he handed Luther a business card.
"Ok, I will. Thanks." And Luther closed the door.
Then Betty spoke.
"What the hell is going on Luther? And why did you lie?"
"I
just like Todd. I don't want to be the one to get him in trouble. I didn't want them to know
that we know Todd, because then they will never leave us alone. They'll be here everyday looking
for him."
"But if he's wanted for murder, maybe we should tell them
everything we know. Maybe he is dangerous. What if he kills us?" Betty looked scared.
Luther opened his arms for her. "Come here baby. Todd isn't going to do anything
to us. He's a nice guy. He's one of the good guys in this world. The only people he ever killed
were murderers, who had it coming."
As they hugged, Betty asked "how
do you know all this?"
"If I tell you, you have to promise me that
you will never tell anyone. I mean anyone. I want your heart on this promise. The same kind
of promise that you made when we got married. I will tell you. But I need your full, undivided
love
and support on this."
She promised to keep it to herself and he told
her everything. He told her about the switch at the jail and about Rod Appleton and everything
he knew.
Betty was floored. "I can't believe it. He's my hero, for what
he done to Rod. But how many others did he kill? How does a man just go around finding people
who deserve to die?"
"Let's just keep this to ourselves now. I don't
even want to talk about it anymore, because one day, the cops might decide to put a bug in
our house. Let's just not talk about it anymore. And whatever you do, please, don't tell Todd
that you know. Ok?" Luther waited for an answer. "Promise me that, ok?"
"Ok, I promise. Subject dropped, no longer to be discussed." And with that, she walked
away and found something to do around the house.
