I'm Telling Todd
Luther and Betty told the cops everything, except the fact that they
really know Todd. Betty went to the police station to look at some mugshots and Luther went
to work. He still worked in Chicago. He made the long drive, like he did all week, since they
moved there. On the way, he worried about Betty. She would be alright for now, while she was
still with the cops, but what about when she came home? Luther made up his mind to find another
job. He had to get one closer to home. Maybe even figure out a way to work at home. He didn't
want to ever leave Betty alone again. If those thugs came back and killed her, he would never
forgive himself.
When he arrived at work, he gave his notice to quit, if you
can call it that. He walked up to his boss and said "I quit. Today is my last day. I moved
to Wisconsin and I'm out of here."
His boss was shocked and didn't want
to lose him. "Awe, come on Luther, we need you." But Luther just shrugged and walked
away. "Maybe I can find some work for you to do at home. You'd only have to come in once
a week. Would that work for you?"
Luther turned around smiling. "That
would be great! I really don't want to quit, but once a week? I could handle that. Thanks John.
You're a good man to work for."
He finished the day, got his assignments
for the week and walked to his car. There was Todd sitting in the parking lot, right next to
his car.
"Todd! Am I glad to see you. You started all kinds of trouble,
man. Some thugs came to my house last night. They were looking for you. I tried to tell them
I didn't know you, but they didn't believe me. They were going to kill me, but I jumped out
the window and called the cops. The cops were looking for you too. I didn't tell them that
I know you, so they should be off our back. But I'm really worried about Betty. I don't know
what to do."
Todd looked worried. "I'm really sorry to bring all
this on you guys. I can't imagine who they are. I must have messed with the wrong guy, somewhere
down the line."
"I'm afraid to go home Todd. They're gonna come
back, I just know it. They said they would. And next time they will kill me for sure."
Luther looked worried too. "I think I'm just going to stay in my old apartment for a while.
I still have another week there, if I want. I paid my rent through the end of the month."
"Yeah. Why don't you. Go get Betty and you guys stay there as long as you
can. I will see what I can do about these so-called thugs." Todd had an evil look in his
eyes now.
"What can you do?" Luther asked. "These guys carry
guns. They're cold-blooded killers."
Todd smiled the smile of a killer
too. "I'll get them. Somehow, I will, I just know it. I have to. I can't let you guys
take all this heat."
Luther was concerned for Todd now. "You can't
take these guys, Todd. Don't even try. I got the police working on it. They'll take care of
it. Just give them some time."
Todd was thinking hard. "They must
have connections with the Chicago Police. How else could they know who I am, or where I live?
It must be those two I got caught for. But, maybe not. They probably know about some of the
others by now. Maybe it was those dope dealers. They probably have those kind of connections."
Luther broke in. "I don't know, but you better be careful. That's all I can
say. Maybe you better start packing a gun."
"No." Todd said.
"I don't like guns. They're too loud. I can't afford to bring any more attention my way.
You, on the other hand, you should carry one. You're just a guy trying to protect himself and
his wife. They would let you go for carrying a gun. Especially in Wisconsin. Everybody has
one, up there. But I'm already in too much trouble. I don't want more. I'm in Chicago too much.
They don't let you have one here. I'll have to get by without one."
"Well,
good luck. I hope you make it." Luther said and stuck out a hand.
Todd
shook it. "Thanks. You too. Don't go back there for a while and in the mean time, I will
try to find these clowns. Or at least figure out who they are."
